Penny
(Avon, 1947-1949)
™ and ©1947 New York Herald Tribune, Inc.
Penny was created by Harry Haenigsen for the Herald Tribune Syndicate in 1943. She was one of the first “bobby-soxers” in comics, a harbinger of the teen culture that would dominate the latter half of the century. To modern readers, young Penelope Mildred Pringle is just another happy-go-lucky teen character. At the time of her introduction, however, she was a revelation. Her obsession with music, boyfriends, and hip dialog (often improvised) were a mystery to her parents, and a joy to younger readers.
