Skyscrapers of Oz is one of the first “yaoi” manga to be released in the U.S. Yaoi books are targeted towards young girls in Japan even though they are focused on homosexual men. The male stars of these books are not only gay, but fashion conscious and handsome as well. Skyscrapers of Oz is about two “Handymen,” Mari Kudoh and Yoichi, who hire themselves out to do all sorts of illegal and clandestine activities. The pair receives an assignment from the wife of a CEO to humiliate her cheating husband. The creative team of Yoshino Somei and Row Takakura develop an ironic twist in this story that elevates it from run-of-the-mill yaoi tales. Despite the yaoi label, Skyscrapers of Oz is really pulp fiction with a high-style makeover; the sexual orientation of the characters becomes irrelevant as the plot steams ahead.
