Monkeyman and O’Brien
(Dark Horse, 1996-1997)
™ and ©1996 Arthur Adams
Ann O’Brien’s father, William S. O’Brien, was a scientist who had been working on an extra-dimensional access chamber. He had seemed on the edge of a breakthrough when a terrible accident occurred which seemed to make him vanish from the face of the Earth. Ann and her sister Oniko were knocked unconscious, having been exposed to extradimensional radiation in the accident. The radiation apparently also gave the sisters super-strength and turned them into seven-foot-tall Amazons. Moreover, an alien visitor had been pulled through the chamber into their world. This visitor was Axwell Tiberius, a ten-foot-tall scientific genius who also happened to be a gorilla.
Arthur Adams’s Monkeyman & O’Brien first appeared as a backup feature in Hellboy: Seed of Destruction. This three-issue mini-series is a joy to read, featuring not only great art, but a real sense of fun seldom seen in the too-serious comics common today.
