Nova (1st Series)

This series introduced us to Richard Rider, a young man who was given extraordinary powers by a dying “Nova Centurion.” Originally from the planet Xandar, these Nova Centurions acted as protectors of the galaxy. Having been deputized by the dying alien, Richard found himself with the ability to fly, incredible strength, and a degree of invulnerability. Although inexperienced, he was determined to use these powers to the best of his ability.

After the conclusion of this series, Nova made an ill-fated appearance in ROM #24 where he lost his powers. As it turned out, the ability to use them had merely been submerged in his subconscious. This was revealed to Richard by Night Thrasher in New Warriors #1, when Night Thrasher dropped him off a building, literally scaring Ryder into regaining the power of flight.
