If the mocumentary This is Spinal Tap the underground work of R. Crumb ever had a lovechild, it would most likely look like R.L. Crabb’s Rockers. Rockers follows the often all too realistic career of a marginally talented rock band and it’s search for happiness, success, and good reefer. When the members of Rockers aren’t throwing up on audience members while on stage performing, they’re muddling through everyday situations involving relationships, chemical dependency, and the nature of fame. All the while, the members of Rockers are completely oblivious to the actions of those who are manipulating them for their own agendas. Often comical, often tragic, Rockers accurately depicts the triumphs and failures people often experience on the road to celebrity. The artwork, reminiscent of Gilbert Shelton’s The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers often depicts excessive drug use and adult situations meant for mature readers.
