Silver Age: Doom Patrol

    (DC, 2000)
™ and ©2000 DC Comics

In DC’s Silver Age crossover event, the intergalactic villain Agamemno has swapped the minds of the Justice League of America with those of their greatest villains. In this slightly over-the-top plot—itself an homage to the plots so common during DC’s real Silver Age—the villains-in-the-heroes-bodies are sent to seek the keys to universal domination, while the JLA must evade the law. Meanwhile, many of DC’s long-lost Silver Age characters must rise to the occasion to help protect Earth in the JLA’s absence. In this one-shot, the characters in question are Elasti-Girl, Negative Man, Robotman and the Chief—the original Doom Patrol. Although the artwork is fine, it has none of the grace and flavor of Bruno Premiani’s work on the Doom Patrol in My Greatest Adventure and their first series. Tom Peyer’s writing, however, flawlessly captures the voice and feel of that simpler time as The Doom Patrol face off against old villains and help defend against the new threat of a Justice League gone renegade.
