When the Silver Surfer first appeared in the pages of Fantastic Four #48, he was conflicted about his cosmic vocation as the herald of the world-devouring Galactus — who had chosen Earth has his next meal. The tortured, even philosophical, Sentinel of the Spaceways proved so popular that writer Stan “The Man” Lee and artist Jack “The King” Kirby — the architects of the Marvel Universe — brought him back for several guest-appearances and gave him his first solo story in the back of 1967’s Fantastic Four Annual #5. All of this led to the Surfer’s first ongoing series in 1968, which featured stories by Lee in all eighteen issues and artwork by John Buscema (The Avengers) in seventeen of those issues. (Incidentally, Silver Surfer #18 was drawn by Kirby.) This thick trade paperback collects the first Silver Surfer series, as well as the Sky-Rider’s first solo story, in glorious black–and–white — a $14.95 bargain.
