Mod Wheels

    (Gold Key, 1971-1976)
™ and ©1971 Western Publishing Company

This “hip” title from Gold Key is most evocative of the Hot Wheels animated series and DC comic book of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Sporting such early 70s accoutrements as mutton-chop sideburns and bell-bottoms, Wheels and his racing team pals—Lump, Cube, ’Scot, and Bit—take on such evils as unethical drivers and rampaging biker gangs. The dialogue is heavy with the perceived teenage slang of the day, and the artwork is vaguely similar to the “heavy” 70s style Mike Sekowsky was using on DC’s Wonder Woman and Supergirl at the time.
