As incongruous as the title may sound, this one-shot holiday-themed book from Dark Horse manages to weave tales of Christmas around a most unlikely scenario.

The lead story, “A Christmas Underground,” featuring Hellboy, displays the moody, somber art of creator, Mike Mignola. Hellboy is a large, red creature from another dimension (misnamed by those who procured him) whose down-to earth speech belies his weird appearance. This paranormal investigator finds himself at the deathbed of old Mrs. Hatch on Christmas Eve. Her daughter disappeared years ago, and subsequently the rest of her entire family has since died. In her delirium, she tells Hellboy that her daughter visits her every night. Bearing a Christmas gift from the dying woman, Hellboy enters an underground world where the satanic influences responsible for the daughter’s disappearance, and the deaths of Mrs. Hatch’s family, are waiting for the last survivor.
