Inspired by the popular Japanese comic style known as manga and anime, Shuriken: Cold Steel is an American series based on characters created by Reggie Byers and Neil Vokes. Though produced in the United States, Shuriken: Cold Steel borrows heavily from typical manga and anime illustration styles including filling panels with “action lines” as well as drawing characters with oversized eyes and large, sweeping locks of hair. The story of a Japanese martial arts expert and bodyguard, Shuriken: Cold Steel follows the adventures of Kyoko Shidara, known as Shuriken because of her fondness for Japanese “throwing stars.” Finding herself unemployed and broke, yet still with lavish tastes, Shuriken takes a job with Danger Temps, “the world’s largest supplier of high risk temporary help” in order to feed both her checking account and hunger for action. But can Shuriken survive in the fast paced, dangerous world that is the personal protection industry? And more importantly, can she make it to next payday without getting evicted?
