Cole Black
(Rocky Hartberg, 1980-1990)
©1980 Rocky Hartberg
Rocky Hartberg self-published the adventures of Cole Black first in a 25¢ comic, then followed with this oddly sized edition in 1980.
In this story, “Moorlock’s Doom,” 1940s detective Cole Black must stop the diminutive criminal Mickey Moorlock from using an army of mechanical men to take over the world. It’s a tale more hardboiled than a dozen Easter eggs, complete with malevolent madmen, leggy blondes, and…a “two woman.” Although well drawn and scripted, one of this comic’s greatest virtues is that it doesn’t take itself seriously. Moreover, it avoids much of the heavy-handed slapstick that makes other detective spoofs fall flat.
