Danger Girl Sketchbook

    (DC, 2001)
™ and ©2001 DC Comics

J. Scott Campbell’s Danger Girl cast of characters are well-nigh irresistible, and so is this meaty, Prestige-format sketchbook. Rife with concept sketches, diagrams intended for a variety of Danger Girl merchandising projects, and even a few clever “flip-book” features, the one-shot is a genuine treasure for Danger Girl completists. There’s a glut of these books on the market, usually sold under the guise of being a pinup book or a “gallery” or a swimsuit issue. But this offering is not nearly so vacuous. Campbell adds plenty of artist notes and explanations to his work, giving readers a genuine sense that they’re being allowed behind the scenes of one of the sexiest action comics around. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that most of the pictures are, shall we say, highly intimate, detailed sketches and, um, figure studies of Campbell’s characters. Even if you’ve never read the regular comic before, this book is worth a look, especially if you’re a budding comics artist…or just wouldn’t mind looking at more than a few pretty pictures.
