The Realm (Vol. 1)

This title no doubt was inspired by fantasy games like Dungeons & Dragons. The story begins when four University of Michigan students travel to a cabin in the Upper Peninsula for a week of rest and relaxation. When they arrive, however, they find themselves transported to another world. In this fantastic place, magic is real, and elves and other races fight against evil on a mythic scale. The college kids become adventurers in this new realm of sword and sorcery.

The Realm was a modestly successful independent fantasy series drawn by Guy Davis. It spawned a follow-up series at Caliber, as well as a spinoff starring Silverfawn, an Elfin heroine of the series. It is probably most notable for issue #4’s introduction of Deadworld, a zombie-filled nightmare where the dead fight with the living for control of the land.
