A Bunch of Baboons
(Baboon, 2004)
™ and © Baboon Books
This sampler of strips and comics by the independent publisher Baboon Books features works by a multitude of artists and writers. Included here are stories that run the gamut from mundane “slice of life” tales to fun and irreverent cartooning strips. The stand-out story of the single issue (which was part of the Free Comic Book Day promotion that ran in comic shops across the country) is by former toy designer and greeting card creator Richard Marcej in the preview story “Action Figure: The Life and Times of Richard Marzelak.” This semi–autobiographical yarn focuses on the creator’s alter–ego, Richard Marzelak, watching over the counter of a buddy’s comic shop and his eventual run–in with the younger generation of fans. His appreciation for the classics like Kirby and Ditko and the kids disdain for the same is a great insight into the problems that the entire industry faces to this day.
