Lucifer’s Garden of Verses

It’s more than a little bit of mislabeling, calling this a religious book, since the faithful will more likely recoil from this tale of Lucifer’s pursuit of Earth’s purest believer. That’s a shame, because Lance Tooks is that too–rare author who can convincingly argue more than one point of view as well as keep separate the radically different voices of his characters. Non–believers, too, should pay attention to watch the real Christianity practiced by the characters of Fever Street. It’s beautifully impossible to discern exactly which point of view, if any, Tooks himself subscribes to. Black Lily, the holiest (but not holier–than-thou) woman in creation, spurns the Prince of Evil, only to watch him return in an exquisitely convincing case of true love that will have the reader wondering if the Devil really has changed his tune. As rich as the story is the idiosyncratic figure work and caricatured faces of Tooks’ world. If this is an example of NBM publishing’s comic line, warm up the presses.
