Pat Mills’ (Marshal Law, 2000 A.D.) and Joe Colquhoun’s (“Johnny Red”) serialized account of WWI is considered by many to be the definitive war story. Focusing on an underage Brit who lies his way into the army, the tale was essentially an anti–war story published in the pro–war Battle Picture Weekly (alternately known as Battle Weekly, Battle Action, or Battle). Charley’s visions of glory and heroic patriotism quickly turned to nightmares amidst the bloody reality of the trenches of the Western Front. Through him, the often conflicting emotions of horror, helplessness, anger, and even humor that any person might experience in such a situation are revealed.

The 1979–1985 strip (1986 stories were produced without Mills) is collected here chronologically, and the accuracy and attention to detail mark it as an excellent addition to any WWI history lesson. An introduction and additional commentary by Mills are included.
