Jumbo Comics was one of the most important titles of comics’ Golden Age and the flagship of the Fiction House publishing enterprise, which was also responsible for Planet Comics, The Spirit, and Jungle Comics. In its first (oversized) issue alone, Jumbo introduced the world to some of the first work of comic art king Jack Kirby (”The Count of Monte Cristo,” his first professional work), master stylist Will Eisner (”Hawk of the Seas”), and Batman creator Bob Kane (”Peter Pupp”)! The star was Mort Meskin’s Sheena, Queen of the Jungle, the first significant comics heroine, who went on to star in movie serials and television during the 40s and 50s. Sheena continued to anchor the lineup through 160 issues before Jumbo switched over to science fiction and horror at the end of its run. Early issues of Jumbo Comics were printed in a 10-1/2-inch x14-1/2-inch format—large even by Golden Age standards.
