Yuppies from Hell

There’s a reason we call it the “Decade of Decadence.” The 1980s brought greed, excessive self-indulgence, and egocentrism to new heights, all entertainingly detailed in this collection of black and white short stories by cartoonist Barbara Slate. With Yuppies from Hell, Slate pursues the same universal, slice of life themes that first brought her to prominence with her cartoon work Ms. Liz, which eventually became a series of animation shorts featured on The Today Show in the early 80s. In Yuppies from Hell, Slate leads us on a tour of the lives and loves of Young Urban Professionals (”Yuppies”) obsessed with their economic and social status during the 1980s. Arguably the most interesting thing about this compilation of short stories is the fact that Marvel Comics publishes it. Yuppies from Hell, with a black and white indie “feel” marks a strong contrast to Marvel’s typical super-hero genre titles like Spider-Man and the X-Men.
