The Comet (Red Circle)
(Red Circle, 1983)
™ and ©1983 Red Circle Productions, Inc.
The Comet, created by Jack Cole (Plastic Man), premiered in the first issue of Pep Comics in 1940. He was John Dickering, a research scientist who used himself as a guinea pig to test the effects of man-made gasses on the human nervous system. The cumulative effects of his experiments turned him into a violent engine of destruction with powerful eye beams that he controlled with a visor, (pre-dating Cyclops of the X-Men by about twenty years). Soon the super-hero format of Pep was relinquished to Archie, but the character returned in this series in 1983. Forty years earlier he may have ruthlessly killed thugs and murderers, but he has had a change of heart in this version, and is haunted by his previous behavior.
