Fatale
(Broadway, 1995-1996)
™ and ©1996 Broadway Comics
“Little bits of many heroic women became parts of Fatale,” Jim Shooter, editor-in-chief of Broadway Comics and writer of this series, says on the text page that opens Fatale, and then he proceeds to tell the story of a…um…well-endowed woman who can absorb energy and memories from others with a kiss, is on the run—often in high heels—from a mysterious group called the Brotherhood, and appears scantily clad—or unclad—in a number of cheesecake panels throughout the first issue and the remaining five issues of the short-lived series.
Ironic? Certainly! Entertaining? Somewhat. Fatale, who also appeared in Broadway’s Powers That Be and Shadow State, represents an attempt to create a strong female lead character. Unfortunately, she quickly becomes a comic book cliché—the big-chested super-heroine whose costume is systematically ripped away over the course of a single issue.
