Lorne-Harvey begins as publisher with #288

Originally created by George Baker for the servicemen’s weekly “Yank,” Sad Sack was the proverbial loser who seemed woefully out of place in the Army. Following the war, Sad Sack (and his creator) were released into civilian life, an adjustment which ill suited the character. Luckily, Harvey Comics bought rights to Sad Sack in 1949, and launched this series. Shortly afterward, in 1951, Sad Sack rejoined the military and once again became a fan favorite. A virtual comrade to Beetle Bailey, he shares the former’s ability to mess up any task, and to create havoc out of the simplest assignment. He differentiated himself primarily in being slightly less lazy, but a great deal more pathetic.

This long-running series continued until 1982, with a brief revival a decade later.
