Groo, the bumbling barbarian returns in this 4-issue mini-series from Dark Horse. Illustrated by creator, Sergio Aragonés and written by his long-time collaborator, Mark Evanier, this story finds Groo the subject of a dying despot’s revenge. Groo has been an inadvertent thorn in his side and so decides that his throne will pass to the son who can bring him Groo’s head. But Groo’s over-blown reputation as a fearless, savage behemoth gives the players pause, even before it is embellished by the exaggerations of a fledgling newspaper printer who realizes that sensationalism sells better than reality. Evanier cleverly parodies the inclination of people to believe whatever they read.

Originally proposed as a lampoon of Conan the Barbarian, Groo’s humorous exploits have out-lived the more melodramatic actions of his inspiration, as has Cerebus the Aardvark who also started as a Conan spoof.
