In the not–too–distant future, virtual reality games become a big money spectator sport, complete with play–by–play commentary from a trio of sportscasters familiar to fans of Monday Night Football. And as is often the case, with big money comes corruption and murder. Agony Acres (the name of the series and the arena where the gladiator-type virtual reality games are played) is a police detective story with a science fiction angle.

In a match with rookie Casey Longmaster, Scotch Stevens, a.k.a. the Skullcrusher, suffered sensory overload and died. Can a rookie be that good or is Mr. Wrathbone, the “owner” of the Skullcrusher right in his accusation of murder? Detective Jack Calhoun and his partner Lucky are assigned to investigate the mysterious death. But Calhoun and his partner may not be allowed to solve the case, since Wrathbone seems to have his own agenda.
