Corrector Yui

    (Mixx, 2001)
TM and (c) Mixx Entertainment, Inc.

You know manga has become popular when mediocre manga titles threaten to squeeze out the good ones. Even those who like magical girls will find this one tough going. Junior high student Yui may transform to “Corrector Yui” to fight evil, but her heart (and the heart of the story) just isn’t in it.

The ratio of hearts and flowers to battling monsters is two-to-one, so it’s Yui’s embarrassments and frustrations over the boy she pines for that are allowed to take center stage. That wouldn’t be so bad, if the execution wasn’t so thoroughly bland, emotionally and otherwise. With a staggering lack of detail and backgrounds, the characters seem to be floating in negative space — in Japan it may be a “style”; here, we call it a coloring book. If you ever wondered how manga artists could produce so many pages in a week — here’s a clue.
