Lady Rawhide (Vol. 2)

    (Topps, 1996-1997)
™ and ©1996 Zorro Productions, Inc.

Readers who missed out on pulp novels in the thirties can experience many of the same tawdry pleasures in Lady Rawhide. Originally appearing as a supporting character in Zorro, this red-headed heroine had a successful run with her own mini-series in 1995. Despite her obvious “Bad Girl” upbringing, the character proved she had enough flair to become more than just another scantily clad vixen with a whip.

In this new 1996 series, however, it seems that any semblance of subtlety has gone from Lady Rawhide or her fellow characters. The stories are lurid, the costumes skimpier than ever, and the first issue alone contains a vampire, a female sociopath with a problem staying in her shirt, and more violence than you can shove a grappling hook through. While the results can still be fun, it’s definitely more of a guilty pleasure than ever.
