Chassis (Vol. 2)

Chassis conjures up the same sense of fun and adventure that made Speed Racer so successful. The title character, Chassis McBain, is a Grand Prix winning “aero-run” driver. The sport resembles 1950s-era stock car driving with the notable exception that the cars here are all rocket-powered and hover over the ground. Interestingly, the setting for the series seems to be an alternate version of the 1940s in which World War II never happened, and Eleanor Roosevelt was president of the U.S.

The action in the series takes place both on and off the race track. In winning one race, Chassis had unwittingly made an enemy of “Covergirl,” a fellow racer whose once-striking beauty had been marred by a tragic accident. Chassis seems to attract danger, but she’s also well able to take care of herself. All in all, it’s an enjoyable, stylish series with broad appeal.
