Jingle Belle Jubilee
(Oni, 2002)
While Santa’s away, the girls will play. Knowing that it’s Christmas Eve and her daddy will be out way late delivering presents, young Jingle Belle arranges to have a few friends over for a party at The Pole. Of course, the daughter of Old Saint Nick isn’t exactly a normal girl, and neither are her pals, among them a witch and a cowgirl with super-powers. As the night goes on, each of the girls proceed to tell how they hooked up with young Miss Belle.
Each flashback is rendered by a different artist, with Dan DeCarlo and Bill Morrison’s being the best and funniest. This all-too-brief but hilarious sequence chronicles Santa and Jingle’s appearance on a sleazy talk show, where the topic is the dysfunctional families of holiday celebrities. The knuckle-cracking son of the Easter Bunny is priceless, and Paul Dini’s characters lend themselves perfectly to the styles of both artists.
This is a fun holiday treat that also features art from Steve Rolston and J. Bone. Jill Thompson and Sergio Aragonés also contribute. It’s unfortunate that future specials will likely be limited, due to the character’s seasonal nature. Maybe Santa’s kid can join up with some leprechauns in March.
