Modern pulpsmiths Joe Zabel and Gary Dumm were frequent contributors to Harvey Pekar’s American Splendor, where they clearly learned the ability to create a good comic by telling a good story. Modern Pulp was a one-shot designed to give wider exposure to their work previously self-published in January Midnight in 1989.

The lead story features secret agent Roxie, who is captured while trying to uncover an arms-smuggling ring and finds herself face-to-face with a man-eating tiger. The second feature in the book, Paris Knight, is another spy story set in a futuristic metropolis. In both cases, strong characterization and quirky storytelling breathe life into commonplace comic plots and basic black-and-white illustration.
