Three Days in Europe

    (Oni, 2002)
™ and ©2002 Antony Johnston & Mike Hawthorne

Three Days in Europe is difficult to fit in any one genre. It reminds the reader of an actor-vehicle movie from the ’60s, with elements of a romance, a caper, action, and adventure.

Jack and Jill’s relationship has been in a slump. To try to spice things up, each gets a romantic trip for two—Jack to Paris to an art gallery, which Jill would love, and Jill to London for a concert, which Jack would love. Unfortunately, they both make their plans secretly, for the same weekend—Valentine’s Day weekend. And neither will budge on the choice of vacation. As if that weren’t trouble enough, they get caught up in a further series of misadventures that would task even costumed heroes, let alone an ad executive and an art gallery manager.

The deeper and more dangerous the trouble gets, the more fun the ride. Johnston and Hawthorne tell a smashing good story, with great characters, a solid pace, and strong, evocative art. Three Days is thoroughly enjoyable and well worth reading.
