Superman 3-D

    (DC, 1998)
™ and ©1998 DC Comics

Most 3-D comics employ the three-dimensional effect throughout the entire story. But this title uses the 3-D illusion intermittently to indicate the strange machinations of Mainframe, a group of computer-themed cyborgs. The leader, Override, intends to digitize this dimension using technology stolen from Jude, one of the Hairies.

When Jack Kirby returned to DC Comics in the early 1970s he imbued the Jimmy Olsen title with a new vitality replete with fantastic characters that were inspired by the popular culture of the time. One of his concepts was the Hairies, a group of high-tech outcasts that employed the counter-culture slang and stereotypical appearance of hippies. The leader of the Hairies was a brilliant scientist known as Jude who piloted a massive vehicle called the Mountain of Judgement. Twenty-five years later, Jude’s rebellious daughter (and friend of Jimmy Olsen), Misa, consider the Hairies to be the Establishment.

Misa, along with Jimmy Olsen and Superman come to Jude’s aid opposing Mainframe and resurrecting the long-buried rancor between father and daughter.
