Spirits of Venom

Reprinting a four-issue story arc split between Web of Spider-Man #’s 95 and 96 and Spirits of Vengeance #’s 5 and 6, Spirits of Venom was a concept whose genesis stemmed from an interesting title. Developed by Marvel editors Danny Fingeroth and Bobbie Chase, the name alone was passed on to writer Howard Mackie, who was given free reign to pen the crossover. Only one provision stood: Make the story fit the title!

Deep below the streets and buildings of midtown Manhattan lurk Johnny Blaze and Ghost Rider, Spirits of Vengeance in pursuit of half-human creatures known as the Deathspawn. The shadow-like demons are feeding off the life force of innocents in an attempt to resurrect their evil king Deathwatch. Tossed into these same tunnels is an unsuspecting Spider-Man, whose attempt at bringing the Hobgoblin to justice leads him deep below the city streets. Add to this mix the deranged antihero Venom, whose will to do good is surpassed by his overwhelming need to kill Spider-Man and you’ve got one rip roaring adventure that stirs up one question: Who’s the good guy?
