American Flagg (Howard Chaykin’s…)

This new American Flagg series stars Reuben Flagg, a Mars-born television star who joined the Plexus Rangers when his career hit the skids. In the decadent world of 2033 America, Reuben was appointed as guardian of the status quo. Instead, he turned the system on its ear. In the end of the last series, he even succeeded in “liberating” the state of Illinois from Plex rule. That done, he intended to introduce a new era of democracy. As it turned out, that was a lot easier said than done…

The first series of American Flagg broke new ground in comics, combining a media-saturated feel with an adult tale of sex, corruption, and the pursuit of power. After creator Howard Chaykin left the book, however, it lost what tenuous focus it had. This second, 1988 series put Chaykin back at the helm, although he entrusts much of the artistic duties to others.
