Nick Ryan the Skull is a dose of nostalgia for fans of old pulp heroes like the Shadow. The title character is a rich businessman who feels compelled to battle criminals and gangsters. He does this as his alter ego the Skull, a masked death’s-head dressed to the nines in a tuxedo and wielding twin pistols. Accompanied by his faithful, but grumbling servant, Jake, he stalks the night and brings fear into the hearts of evildoers. Sure, it’s a bit over the top at times, but that doesn’t stop it from being fun.

Issues of this series also include the backup feature El Gato Negro (the Black Cat). This pro wrestler/super-hero mixes humor with adventure as he battles a host of outrageously corny villains.
