Pilgrim Jager
(Anime Works, 2004)
™ and © 2002 Toh Ubukata & Mami Itoh
In sixteenth century Naples, Adele and Karin are professionisti—street performers—who barely make enough to pretend to pay rent to the kindly innkeeper who has taken them in. On top of that, they also grew up as benandanti, members of an ancient pagan tradition, and if the fathers of the Church knew of this their lives would be forfeit. But when evil forces threatens to break out of the city’s central prison, the practical–minded Commissario Alberti summons them to defeat the darkness with their acrobatic and magical skills. And while they slowly accumulate the funds to purchase the plenary indulgences they so desperately desire, the Church’s super–powered malandanti are scouring the countryside to hunt down witches.
With slavish attention to detail, writer Toh Ubukata and artist Mami Itoh delves into a little known aspect of European history to create a world rich in imagery, where the effects of one’s actions on the soul is more important than on anything else.
