Serenity Rose
(Slave Labor, 2004)
™ and © Slave Labor Graphics
Back in the 1600s, it was a bad time to be a witch, and entire covens were eradicated by a frightened populace. In the present day, it's not so great either, according to Serenity Rose, a local witch in the spookiest town in America. Through her journal, she shares feelings, experiences, and knowledge both old and new—including a history of the Crestfallen coven of witches, circa 1661. Most of the action is set in the here and now, and told in pictorial journal format. The series gives a rather opinionated young witch the opportunity to mock such things as rock concerts, Kiss videos, and the shallow and uninteresting people around her. She shares these experiences with at least one good friend, Tess, her younger sister, Mary Ann, and just maybe another person who will give her a better appreciation of the dark and daunting world around her.
Witty and pretty, this series mixes spooky and cute into a story that also features ogres, goblins, and an entire witches’ brew of characters.
