Blood of the Demon

DC’s latest series featuring Jack Kirby’s Demon gets off to a strong start courtesy of John Byrne, who provides plots and pencils for Blood of the Demon. As the series’ title implies, Etrigan shares the spotlight with his human host, demonologist Jason Blood, and Byrne provides intriguing new twists to both characters in this introductory tale. Influenced in some respects by Joss Whedon as much as by Kirby, the story moves along swiftly, and Byrne—teamed with scripter Will Pfeiffer—recaps enough of Jason and Etrigan’s history to get new readers up to speed without unduly weighing down the main plot, which pits Blood and The Demon against a new adversary. The focus is clearly on horror in this title—witness the graphic torture scene early in the issue—and the art, with inker Nekros and colorist Alex Bleyaert, has a weight and tone that complement the mood of this series.
