Spyman

In the late 1960s, Harvey comics, publishers of such family fare as Casper the Friendly Ghost, Hot-Stuff, and Richie Rich, decided unsuccessfully to break into the super-hero market then dominated by Marvel and DC. Spyman, along with other short-lived characters such as Dynamite Joe, Jigsaw, Jack Frost, and the aptly named B-Man, was one such attempt.

Spyman is Johnny Chance, a member of “Liberty,” America’s top-secret counter-espionage agency. He fights crime with the help of his electro-robot hand, which contains a litany of gadgets including a blaster, a camera, and a black light ray. The hand also acts as a bullet shield and communicator. At the first sign of trouble, Johnny is summoned to Liberty’s HQ by changing the color of the Statue of Liberty’s torch (sort of a Spy-signal). He then joins his fellow Liberty fighters in very bad costumes to fight megalomaniacs, giant robots and sneering villains everywhere.
