Tales of Ordinary Madness

Before Allred took over as artist for Marvel’s X-Force (later X-Statix), his best known project was his self-created Madman, published as a number of mini-series by various publishers beginning in the early Nineties. But around the time he kicked off Madman, he also served as artist on this nearly forgotten mini-series when it was first published by the late Kitchen Sink. And after 12 years, Oni has rescued this story about a troubled psychological mind from total obscurity.

Fans may recognize Bourne’s name from many a comic book letter column over the years. His study of a psychologist whose mind becomes traumatized by the troubles of the very patients he’s treating is fascinating. Despite its predictable and almost pre-ordained ending, Bourne’s first effort is impressive. Allred’s early art ironically has more of a mainstream feel to it, but it doesn’t mask his trademark, understated portrayals of characters’ emotional trauma.
