Comics above Ground: How Sequential Art Affects Mainstream Media

More people than ever are interested in comics. One reason is that comics’ influence on other media has grown. This anthology interviews prominent artists and writers about their personal experiences in furthering this trend and the insights they’ve drawn accordingly.

Well-known pros include Adam Hughes (covers), Bernie Wrightson (character design), Louise Simonson (children’s books), Bruce Timm (TV animation), Greg Rucka (writing), Jeph Loeb (motion pictures), and Dave Dorman (illustration). Others comment on additional topics, ranging from how comics have affected the sequence of storyboards to the development of videogames and the definition of fine art itself.

The publisher reinforces its good track record of marrying interviews with illustrations. But this title’s stated goal is a hefty one. So, even though the Q&As encompass the promised variety of subjects, they don’t combine to argue the overall vision convincingly. Yes, comics are having a large and diverse impact, but that may be due less to the power of the comics industry and more to ambitious creators who capitalize on expressing their talents elsewhere.
