Will Eisner Presents

    (Eclipse, 1990-1991)
™ and ©1990 Will Eisner

This three-issue mini-series from Eclipse reprints the adventures of Bob Powell’s stylish occult hero from the 1940s. In the first of several 5-page stories, originally published in the back of Will Eisner’s The Spirit newspaper section, his origin (sort of a cross between the Shadow’s and Captain Marvel’s) is given and his powers are explained. Like the Spectre, Mr. Miracle is virtually omnipotent, even by super-hero standards. He can change a bridge into rubber to trap fleeing Nazi saboteurs; he can turn a prop plane into an eagle to defeat an evil bomber; he can transform himself into a goat to climb a mountain in pursuit of a mad European dictator; he can change a squirrel into a horse (sense a pattern here?) to carry a luscious female prisoner; and when magic fails him, he’s equally adept with his fists.

These strips are notable for their smooth, clean artwork and their goofy-cool pulp feel.
