Aquaman (5th Series)

Aquaman is one of DC’s oldest and most famous super-heroes. Nevertheless, his solo titles have had notoriously little success. This 1994 series hopes to change all that, following as it does on the heels of the acclaimed Aquaman: Time and Tide mini-series.

Writer Peter David made big changes to Aquaman in this new series. The most evident is the loss of Aquaman’s left arm in a battle against arch-villain Black Manta. Still feverish from the resulting sickness, Aquaman replaced it with a harpoon. His thinking was that he needed a symbol—something to both tell of his watery heritage and to show surface dwellers how their own weapons could be used against them. David also revitalized Aquaman by dispensing with much of his previous angst and indecisiveness. The result is an interesting—but very different—Aquaman.
