Millennium Edition: Action Comics

Are you one of the hundred or so—at most—people in existence who owns an original copy of this June 1938 comic book that introduced the hero known as Superman? If not, there’s not much better of a way to enjoy it than the Millennium Edition reprint. Reading it, you sense that this Superman might become pretty popular: bullets bounce off him, he hoists a car over his head with ease, and in his alter-ego of wimpy reporter Clark Kent, he gets to hang out with the intelligent, sassy, and lovely dame known as Lois Lane. Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s hero displays admirable wit, too.

But while Superman had the most staying power, it is but one of many tales in the reprint of early issues. It also presents rancher Chuck Dawson, who fights crooked cattlemen; master magician Zatara, who uses spells and magic tricks—and powers—to battle the mob; wealthy adventurer Tex Thomson; and the illustrated adventures of Marco Polo, among others.
