Batman: Castle of the Bat

The Elseworlds series is DC’s vehicle for developing stories outside of the normal DC Universe continuity, or putting familiar characters in unfamiliar historical or geographical settings. Castle of the Bat, from 1994, retells the Batman story as a 19th century gothic horror tale in the tradition of Frankenstein, with Bruce Wayne in the role of misunderstood scientist trying to avenge the murder of his parents, along with his trusty hunchbacked servant Alfredo.

Complementing Jack C. Harris’s truly weird and original plot is beautiful painted artwork by Bo Hampton, which brings the claustrophobic netherworld of 19th century central Europe to life in a fantastic kaleidoscope of moody colors and expressionistic settings.
