Before the animated TV specials and mass merchandising for children, the late Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts was a comic strip about kids made for grown-ups. The insightful, sarcastic wit of early Peanuts, beautifully packaged here by Fantagraphics Books, will likely trespass beyond the comprehension of the grade-schoolers the series focuses on. The first volume of these vintage reprints introduces Charlie Brown, the introverted, pessimistic and yet lovable loser who became a role model for nerds everywhere. There’s an underlying darkness to these comic strips that keeps them fresh several decades after they were initially written and drawn. Schulz captured how children really felt, accurately portraying their playfulness while not ignoring their awkwardness and melancholy. There is slapstick humor, but adult revelations as well. This introductory book also includes the first appearances of Lucy, Shroeder, Snoopy, and an infant Linus.
