Unknown Soldier (3rd Series)

    (Vertigo, 1997–1998)
™ and ©1997 DC Comics, Inc.

The trend of updating characters from more innocent times and giving them a darker demeanor continues with this title from Vertigo. Originally appearing in Star Spangled War Stories and then in his own comic, The Unknown Soldier was the living embodiment of every fallen hero. He was a horribly disfigured man who always appeared with his face wrapped in bandages unless he was in disguise.

In this version, upstanding CIA agent, William Clyde, finds a list of veterans placed on his computer anonymously. Believing these men to be connected to another case, he instead found that they all have alarming tales of a man working covertly, and not entirely legally, in international affairs. This “unknown soldier’s” patriotic fervor is not mitigated by concerns for national sovereignty or human rights. But when these men are systematically assassinated it becomes apparent that someone doesn’t want Agent Clyde discovering anything else.
