On the surface Blue is a calm examination of the line between infatuation and obsession. However, boiling beneath the tranquil surface is a taboo love triangle. When Masami mysteriously disappeared at the end of the school year, Kayako’s curiosity was piqued. When she returns for the new semester, Kayako is determined to finally get to know the enigmatic Masami. Their friendship blossoms into something more, but is interrupted when Masami’s married ex–boyfriend tries to lay claim to a heart that is no longer his. Known for her work in “josei” (lady’s comics) that often depicts realistic relationships, Kiriko Nananan illustrates Blue with a restrained and stoic grace.
