JLA: Welcome to the Working Week
(DC, 2003)
™ and © DC Comics, Inc.
After his town is evacuated to the JLA Watchtower and returned home, Marlus Randone finds himself left behind. Marlus is the self-publisher of a hero-themed magazine. This presents a perfect opportunity to observe his favorite subjects in their natural habitat.
Marlus’ story is not so much the crux of the matter as is his point of view. Through the young writer’s perspective, the reader gets to see JLA members between epic adventures, from prep work to down time.
Superman “counsels” a villain. Wonder Woman enlists super-convicts as personal trainers. Batman pushes himself. And Plastic Man? It’s par-tay at the Watchtower! Seeing many old friends in that scene alone makes the comic book worthwhile.
Then there’s the threat to Earth, but that’s really incidental.
Willing suspension takes a hit for most of the issue. The reader is waiting for “Bruce?” “Yes, Clark?” to come at any time. And Superman, Batman, Flash, and The Martian Manhunter can’t tell there’s a stranger in their headquarters for a week? This is tied up nicely in the end, so just accept it until you get there.
— Jack Abramowitz
