The Kingdom: Planet Krypton

    (DC, 1999)
™ and ©1999 DC Comics

The 1999 mini-series The Kingdom was writer Mark Waid’s ambitious attempt to bring his epic Elseworlds tale Kingdom Come into mainstream DC continuity and reclaim the rich history of the DC universe from the mess that followed 1984’s Crisis On Infinite Earths. Planet Krypton is a one-shot title in the series (which also included Son of the Bat, Nightstar, Offspring, Kid Flash and The Kingdom), but is the lynchpin upon which the storyline rests. A young waitress working in super-hero-themed restaurant Planet Krypton finds herself at the center of a convergence of “hypertime” where discarded threads of Pre-Crisis DC history are gathered. As Batman investigates, he discovers traces of the pre-Crisis multiverse still exist alongside infinite other possible timelines (including Elseworlds like the Kingdom Come universe). His brief encounter with the ghost of the 1950s Batwoman is a great moment for long-time DC fans who fondly remember pre-Crisis DC.
