Ultimate Marvel Magazine
(Marvel, 2001)
™ and © Marvel Characters, Inc.
Always eager to cash in on a good thing, Marvel hustled out this oversized magazine, which reprinted many of the early issues from Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men and Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, shortly after the Ultimate books began to take off. Aside from the 70 pages of reprinted stories, the magazine also features a few text extras like news of current and upcoming Marvel movies and comics. Also included are featurettes on comics and movie minutia, such as a story on the weaponry used by actor Wesley Snipes in the Blade film based on the comic character of the same name. If you missed the earliest installments of the reinterpreted Spider-Man and X-Men sagas, this is probably a good place to pick them up (unless the high tide raising the prices of all the Ultimate books pulls this one up too). In the case of the Spider-stories, Brian Michael Bendis’ (Powers) words are as crisp and compelling as ever, while the slightly larger format of the magazine gives Mark Bagley’s art more of vibrant, poster-like feel.
