The Spirit (5th Series)

Harvey Comics published two giant-sized anthology issues featuring Will Eisner’s creation The Spirit in 1964 and in early 1965. Each issue reprinted classic Spirit adventures, along with new stories of the masked detective.

A longtime favorite of newspaper strips and classic comics, these giant Harvey issues were an excellent showcase for Eisner to reintroduce the readers to the Spirit in the mid-1960s. Stories included the Spirit origin, telling how amateur sleuth Denny Colt was thought killed by the arch criminal Cobra, but was actually in a state of reduced body functioning, thanks to a strange liquid. When he reappeared, Colt thought it better that the world still think him dead, so that he could more easily flush out the criminals he had pursued before. So, the “dead” Denny Colt donned a mask and became the Spirit.
